Emirates review – August 2013

Emirate A380 from Sydney to Dubai

Date: August 2013

Destination: Sydney to Dubai return

Aircraft: Airbus A380-800

Flying time: Sydney-Dubai 14hrs 30mins |Dubai-Sydney 13hrs 50mins

I was really looking forward to this trip as I was flying to London via Dubai with Mum and Dad to attend my youngest brother’s wedding.  It had been ages since I last travelled just with my parents and I was excited to be spending some time with them and seeing my brother again.

We flew Qantas to Sydney the previous day and spent the night at Rydges Airport Hotel in order to make our 6am flight the following morning easier.  Emirate’s A380-800 was massive and the leg room was very generous compared with other airlines I had flown with. I loved the uniforms the female cabin crew were wearing.  It’s great to get a taste of the country you’re travelling to before you even get there.

The plane left on time and it was not long after take-off we were handed hot towels prior to breakfast being served.  I had the omelette with sautéed butter mushrooms, baked beans and hash brown accompanied by a croissant, bread roll with butter and jam, fruit salad and an orange juice.  A cup of tea later and I was as full as a boot.

I then settled in to watch The Great Gatsby with Leonardo Dicaprio.   Although a bit slow to start, I ended up enjoying it thoroughly.  It wasn’t too long after that when lunch was served.   I had the Thai Green Curry which came with a delicious salmon salad, bread roll and butter, biscuits and cheese, rhubarb crumble with vanilla sauce, a chocolate and a drink.

I then proceeded to watch “The Sapphires” with Jessica Mauboy which was another good movie. After another movie which wasn’t so good I decided to have a short nap.  “The Call”, a thriller with Halle Berry proved to be a good watch and I spent the remainder of the time talking to Mum and Dad, stretching my legs and watching a bit of TV.  One last snack of a pie (Beef and Onion or Cheese and Vegetable) was handed out before we started our descent.  Being an Aussie I felt it really needed tomato sauce but they had none to offer.

Drinks were brought around at regular intervals throughout the fourteen hour flight and there was the snack bar available during the flight also. It was exciting passing over India and even more so as we began to see sand covered dunes as we made our descent into Dubai.  We arrived at the new Terminal 3 and it was surprisingly quiet at 2:30pm Dubai time (8:30pm Australia time).  After checking in to our hotel at the airport we made our way to the Mezzanine Restaurant for our complimentary meal provided by Emirates.  Worth remembering if you have a stopover in Dubai for more than a couple of hours. You can choose from a number of eateries at the airport.  The one we ate at offered a wide range of food from all over the world and had surprisingly few people there.

Thanks Emirates for the complimentary meal

After picking up some orange infused dates, gigantic nuts and macaroons we made our way to our room where we could get a comfortable sleep before our 2:05am Qantas flight to London.

The flight back from Dubai departed at 2:15am local time.  Breakfast was a choice of Spanish Omelette with tomato basil sauce, served with fried potatoes, sauteed spinach and mushrooms or Herb scrambled eggs with chicken sausage, rosti potato and baked beans.  Both were served with fresh fruit, a croissant and a bread roll as well as juice and tea or coffee.

Later in the flight tasty vegetarian pizzas, topped with tomato and cheese were handed out.

Towards the end of the flight lunch was served with a choice of Ginger beef with egg noodles and stir fried mixed vegetables and Chicken veloure with roasted herb potatoes and seasoned green beans.  Each came with a tuna salad, cheese and biscuits, apricot banana cake and chocolate.  Once again, the meal was delicious.

After a long day of flying we reached Kingsford Smith Airport in Sydney around 10pm where we spent the night at Rydges before our flight home the following morning.

Pros :

Flight left on time

Lots of leg room on board plane

Excellent range of audio visual entertainment with large screen

Delicious food and drinks offered at regular intervals

Toilets cleaned regularly

Cons:

The blanket I had to begin with smelled strongly of vomit

In Summary:

I love flying Emirates and highly recommend them for their comfort, quality of food and cleanliness.  Unfortunately my experience with the blanket was what kept me from rating them five stars.
