Grounds

Built around Lake Mohonk, the extensive grounds provide for some stunning views as well as a wide assortment of activities such as water activities, hikes on 85 miles of trails, rock climbing and a walk up to the base of the Mohonk Skytop memorial tower where a climb of a further 100 steps will take you to the top.  There is a private beach where children can play with sand toys.  In the winter the lake freezes over and ice skating becomes an optional activity.  There is also a stable and museum on site.  You can spend hours or even days exploring all the grounds have to offer.

Breakfast

Meals including breakfast are served in the historic Main Dining room with its cathedral ceilings and original woodwork from 1893.  Guests can enjoy panoramic views of the Catskill Mountains from the windows whilst serving themselves to the extensive buffet created from the award winning culinary team.  Breakfast is from 8:00am to 9:30am during the week and bookings are essential.  Attire is casual.  There is a wide range of food to choose from including pastries and muffins, cereals, fresh fruits and smoothies, deli selections, typical western food and a crepe station.  I had the crepes and an assortment of hot dishes and they were all delicious.

Pros

  • A beautiful historical place to stay whilst you step back in time to a bygone era
  • A wide range of facilities and activities to keep you occupied
  • Complimentary WiFi
  • Delicious food with a wide choice of artistically created cuisine
  • The complimentary handmade chocolates left in our room were a nice touch

Cons

  • A lot of the activities didn’t appear to be running when we were there
  • Expensive
  • Small rooms with not much water pressure in the showers

Summary

We really enjoyed our experience at Mohonk Mountain House and were quite blown away with its beauty.  I would recommend going in Summer time when more of the activities are on or in Winter for the same reason.  As it is so expensive, save it for a special occasion and you will not forget the experience.  The fresh mountain air, hikes and fun activities will make up for all that delicious food you will want to eat and which is included in your stay.
