The Hilton Garden Inn, New York Accommodation review – July 2016

The Hilton Garden Inn, NYC

Situated on West 35th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, this modern Midtown Manhattan hotel built in 2009 is in an ideal location.  Close to the Empire State Building, Macy’s at Herald Square, Times Square, Madison Square Garden and Fifth Avenue shopping there is plenty to see and do in the area.  And with just a short walk to Penn Station, it’s easy to get to places further away.

Upon check in we were upgraded to a room on the 21st floor with a view of the Empire State building as well as given a complimentary full buffet breakfast for the four of us.  We were pretty excited about this one.  The Empire State Building loomed in front of us as we looked out the window.  Another view we would not forget nor tire of looking at.  The room, although smaller than the last one we stayed in, was newer and felt very clean.  The doona covers were more easily washable and they appeared nice and clean.  The window opened like the last place, allowing for fresh air into the room.  This room had a fridge and a microwave which is not overly common in New York for some reason.  As it was summer, we found the fridge a real bonus. There was a flat screen TV but we didn’t use it.

The bathroom was in excellent condition and the heater made it easy to dry clothes.  The clothes hangers could be removed from the closet so we could hang some of our clothes on the shower rail to dry.  The hotel has 298 guest rooms, a restaurant, bar, 24 hour pavilion pantry, fitness centre and WiFi. And down in the foyer there is a glass dispenser of water with refreshing slices of orange inside and cups so you can help yourself to a drink on your way in or out.

The breakfast dining room was a good size and although it didn’t contain the largest range of food, there was still enough to enjoy a hearty breakfast.  We loved the waffle maker which allowed you to make your own fresh waffles.  It would have been nice to have some berries or real maple syrup to go with them though.  And labelling the drinks and hot food would have been a good idea as we were unsure of what some of the things were. We found the staff there as well as at reception to be very friendly and helpful.

Pros:

Amazing view of the Empire State Building from our room

Well located close to many attractions but not noisy

Very friendly staff

New and modern hotel that was very clean

Rooms contained both a fridge and a microwave

Bottled water was available at reception as well as a water dispenser located near the bar

Cons:

Lifts were a bit slow

Beds were Double rather than Queen and the air-conditioner on the floor beside the bed was a bit noisy.

In Summary: For an awesome view of the Empire State Building and in easy proximity to plenty of attractions, this hotel is a a good choice at a reasonable price.
