Things to do in the Area

All the places we saw were on foot with most being within a 10 minute walk and nothing further than 20 minutes away. Places we visited whilst staying at Hilton Garden Times Square North included:

  • Times Square (a 5 minute walk) – There’s always something going on here at this famous landmark that’s surrounded by lots of people and bright lights.
  • The New York Public Library (a 7 minute walk) – a beautiful building inside and out with free guided tours and exhibitions.
  • The Lego shop (an 8 minute walk)  – a fun place to see that doesn’t cost anything (unless you purchase of course).  A must if you have kids or are a kid at heart.
  • Intrepid Museum (a 17 minute walk) – this was definitely the highlight of our stay and well worth a visit.  We spent a very interesting day at this Sea, Air and Space museum getting to see a Concord and space shuttle up close and walk through an aircraft carrier and submarine.
  • The Jewish Museum (a 19 minute walk) – I found this rather disappointing and was hoping to learn more about the Jews.
  • Katz’s Deli (a 20 minute walk) – an iconic place due to the famous scene from the movie “When Harry met Sally”.  Delicious pastrami but quite overpriced and busy.
  • Dominique Ansel Bakery (a 24 minute walk) – from the French creator of the Cronut, this bakery has a delicious range of mouth watering treats.  Be sure to get there early though so you don’t miss out on the limited supply of cronuts like we did.

Pros

  • The hotel was fairly new and so the rooms were modern and in great condition
  • The location was convenient
  • I loved the bathroom and its big thick glass door
  • The price was good compared with other places we’d been staying at
  • I liked having flooring in the room instead of carpet as it felt cleaner
  • Complimentary WiFi
  • Although we didn’t end up using it, the microwave could come in handy
  • I liked the bathroom amenities which were more natural and contained less chemicals.

Cons

  • There was no bottled water, even at Reception and instead of the staff saying so they said they were waiting on their delivery but we stayed four nights and at no time during our stay did they have it.
  • There was nowhere to buy laundry detergent so we could use the washing machines in the hotel.  There should be some in reception or the laundry that you can purchase.  So as a result we couldn’t get our washing done.
  • A few of the staff (not including at Reception) don’t speak English which made communicating difficult.
  • It’s a fair bit further to Penn Station than our last hotel so we had a bit of a walk with our luggage.
  • There was a sign at Reception saying Housecleaning was on request and had housecleaning trying to come into our room even though we hadn’t requested it.
  • Sometimes the internet here did not work well for me although my husband had no issues with it.

Summary

We were both happy with this hotel.  It was new and modern, well priced for New York City and conveniently located to lots of attractions.  The only downside was no bottled water in room or at Reception and no laundry detergent available to purchase so we couldn’t use the laundry room to wash our clothes.
