This was our first time staying at a Mantra hotel.  We were given a room on the 18th floor with views of the Pacific Ocean.  At under $200 a night for the three of us including full buffet breakfast, this well located hotel was a good find.

Price

We paid just under $200 a night for the three of us in a twin room which had two double beds and included buffet breakfast.  We were given a room on the 18th floor with views of the ocean to the right and a fun park and buildings and streets straight ahead.

Location

Located right in the heart of Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast, the Mantra on View is just 160 metres from the beach.  The hotel is also in easy walking distance to the shops and eateries.  If you want to explore further then there’s a tram stop just metres from the entrance to the hotel.

Parking

Self parking is available for $8 a night at the adjacent public car-park.  There is a height restriction of 1.9 metres.  Valet parking is also available for $15 a car per night.

Internet

High speed internet is available in each room for a fee unless you’re a Mantra member and book directly through the hotel’s website in which case it’s free.

Room

The room including the bathroom was modern having been recently renovated and a good size.  From the room you could easily see the nearby beach and at night the city lights made for an attractive view.  The outdoor private veranda with table and chairs allowed you to take in the sights and sounds whilst inhaling the salty sea air.   The room featured:

  • two comfortable double sized beds
  • 2 phones and an alarm
  • powerboard and plenty of power outlets
  • large Samsung flat screen cable TV
  • airconditioning
  • desk and chair
  • fridge
  • tea and coffee making facilities
  • safe
  • iron and ironing board
  • in-room dining
  • bath with shutters that can be opened so you can enjoy the views out the window
  • complimentary urban skincare co. soap, shampoo, conditioner and moisturiser
  • plenty of storage space
  • clothes line in the shower

We slept well in the comfortable double sized beds

A good sized flat screen TV with a decent selection of channels

The small fridge might be useful in Summer or for longer stays

Tea and coffee making facilities as well as some cutlery which I thought was a good idea

A room safe can be a good idea for storing passports if travelling from overseas

A selection of in-room snacks and light meals including kids meals

In-room dining menu including beverages

The modern bathroom had been recently renovated

Water pressure was good in the shower. Blinds opened up to the view out the window

Toilet inside the bathroom was new and clean

Grounds

The grounds out the back of the hotel had a lovely swimming pool area including a children’s pool.  There were deck chairs for sunning yourself and plenty of areas offering shade as well.  The adjacent tennis court appeared a bit run down but might have been about to be renovated.  Beside the pool area was a fully equipped gym.  Not very large, but enough to complete a decent workout.

The pool area looked attractive and would no doubt be popular in summer

Nosh Pan Asian restaurant where we ate breakfast each morning

The usual hot fare you see at a hotel breakfast

A selection of breads and pastries to choose from

A selection of cereals of which I never have as there is way more interesting food

I like to start the day with some Bircher muesli, yoghurt and fruit before getting to the hot stuff

Some condiments to go with the Asian dishes on offer

Juices and cold water which I like to dilute my juice with

What’s nearby

There is plenty to do within walking distance of Mantra on View including:

  • walk along the beach or go for a swim
  • eat at one of the trendy cafe’s or restaurants nearby
  • sample one of the ice-creams or shakes from one of the many ice-cream shops
  • do an Aquaduck land and water adventure tour
  • visit Ripley’s Believe it or Not museum
  • for the thrill seeker, try the Slingshot & Vomatron theme park
  • stroll through the Beachfront Markets on Wed, Fri and Sun nights

Otherwise you can hop on a tram just outside the hotel and go a little further afield to places including:

  • any of the main theme parks such as Dreamworld, Sea World or Movie World
  • a number of different shopping centres including Pacific Fair in Broadbeach
  • Chinatown night markets

The water was still too cold to swim but it was a lovely day to be out on the beach

The Hard Rock Cafes always have plenty of interesting memorabilia to look at. The food’s quite decent too.

Liv- Eat is new to the Gold Coast and offers fresh healthy meals and drinks. The staff are great too.

The Asian Beef Bowl was delicious and so was the Satay Chicken at Liv-eat.

We had to queue up at this tasty and inexpensive restaurant in Chinatown

We ate at this local Italian restaurant for my daughter’s Birthday

They did really good cheesy garlic bread here. A warning – the serves are BIG

Copenhagen make it difficult to resist their ice-creams with the smell of their freshly made waffle cones

Of course I would like cream and topping and nuts with that 🙂

Companies like Aquaduck offer adventure tours on land and water

Pacific Fair shopping centre has 5 floors of shops and an attractive outdoor area

We came across this shop at Pacific Fair selling delicious cheese tarts

Chinatown markets although not very big have a good vibe to them

Pros

  • Well priced
  • Great location
  • Good views of the beach and the city
  • Modern and attractive room recently renovated
  • Nice pool area
  • Complimentary luggage storage
  • The pen in the room was better quality than what you normally get
  • The room was clean and the bedding didn’t have the heavy covers which don’t always end up getting washed between guests.
  • Parking rates were very affordable

Cons

  • Double beds rather then Queen or King
  • Could smell cigarette smoke coming from the vents in the air-conditioner at night
  • No free internet
  • The bathroom door and a couple of walls needed repainting as this detracted from the otherwise smart modern new look of the room.

Summary

We enjoyed our stay at this hotel and I would definitely stay here again.  Mantra on View was very well located, with large modern rooms that offered some great views, especially up on the 18th floor.  I found the room to be very clean and the breakfast enjoyable both mornings.  Staff were friendly and even allowed us to check out an hour later.
