What to pack in your carry-on

These days my carry on luggage is my only luggage but this list has been put together assuming you are also taking checked-in luggage as that’s the way most people travel.  I have a page on travelling light if you are interested.

Carry-on list

Travel diary and pen

Kindle or book (in case the entertainment system isn’t working)

Camera or phone if that’s what you use to take photos

Mobile phone

Lip balm for rehydrating dry lips – I bring a tube of paw paw ointment

Travel hairbrush

Earphones (only if you find the ones on the aircraft inadequate)

Wallet or money belt containing cash, cards, itineraries etc.

Pain relief such as Panadol (always best to be prepared)

Any toiletries or medications you may need

Sunglasses (for when you reach your destination)

Reading glasses if you use them

Antibacterial wipes

The above list of items will fit easily into a backpack or even a large handbag.  I usually bring a travel guide book of the place I’m visiting so I can do some last minute research.  I’ve found most airlines feed you pretty well so there’s usually no need to bring food on board.  If you have a cold however, sucking on some eucalyptus drops might help to unblock your ears and stop them from hurting so much on take off and landing.  Choose a lightweight book and travel diary as you don’t want to be bogged down with unnecessary weight.

Of course if you are travelling with young children or infants your list will need to include other items like nappies, spare clothes, bottles, toys, snacks etc.
