Date: January 2012
Destination: Sydney to Phuket, Thailand return
Aircraft: Airbus A380-800
Flying time: Sydney to Singapore 8hrs 5mins| Singapore to Phuket 1hr 45mins
This was our first time flying Singapore Airlines and the four of us were very excited. We drove a hire car to Sydney Airport where we would board our first A380-800. We would get to sit up top where it was quieter, more spacious and less crowded. Upstairs was decked out for premium economy but for some reason the airline decided not to use it for that.
The two Girls sat in front of us by the window in a two three two seating configuration. Despite boarding being delayed, the flight left on schedule at 12:15pm. Shortly after being seated, we were handed hot perfumed face washers to freshen up – a really nice touch and a far cry from the disposable ones or none at all. Peanuts and drinks were then given out until lunch was ready to be served.
Lunch was a choice of Stir fried chicken in dried chilli with vegetables and steamed rice and Pan fried fish fillet with white wine sauce, vegetables and potatoes. These were served with sliced turkey and coleslaw salad, cheese and crackers, bread roll with butter and a Cornetto for dessert. The food was delicious and I liked it that the children were served first.
The Entertainment system had a good selection of movies and shows to watch, music to listen to and games to play. There was an interesting documentary about the plane and its crew. About two hours before we landed we were again handed hot face washers before our snack was served. This was a choice of Penne in mushroom cream sauce or fried rice with chicken and vegetables.
The staff were very friendly and attentive and the Girls were given a Panda eye mask by one of the crew members. We arrived at Changi Airport at about 5:20pm local time and had to catch the skytrain to terminal 2 for ongoing flight to Phuket. The airport is the most attractive airport I’ve ever seen and even has its own butterfly enclosure. I would have liked to have longer to explore but we had to board our next flight.
Our connecting flight was with SilkAir, a subsidiary of Singapore Airlines and took off at 6:35pm. For dinner we chose the Chicken with potatoes and vegetables. This came with a small container of watermelon and pineapple. Another thing I liked about Singapore Airlines was the metal cutlery which most airlines reserve for Business or First class. As our flight was under two hours, it wasn’t long before we commenced our descent into Phuket International Airport.
Our flights home were overnight flights and we had dinner and a drink at the airport in Phuket before we boarded our flight.
Pros:
- Great service and tasty food
- Children are served first
- Metal cutlery in Economy
- Upstairs seating in Economy
- Hot hand towels distributed prior to meals
Cons:
- Can’t think of any
In Summary: I highly recommend Singapore Airlines. The service, food and cleanliness of the airline is exemplary and it was great being able to sit upstairs as an Economy passenger.
